BUKIT Aman has advised property owners and developers to scrutinise the people they rent out or sell their properties to. “Don’t simply sell or rent for the sake of profits, as irresponsible parties may use (these premises) for criminal purposes,” Narcotic Crimes Investigation Department (NCID) director Comm Datuk Mohd Khalil Kader Mohd says.
“A property owner will also be investigated if a drug syndicate has rented their unit. I hope the owners will be more alert and choose their tenants wisely,” he says.
A drug wholesaler was busted, resulting in a seizure worth RM144.9mil on Jan 13 in a few locations in Kuala Lumpur, two of them in Desa ParkCity, a residential area known for its security features.
Mohd Khalil says the drug market has been seriously hit.
He says drug syndicates have chosen to operate in high-rise (developments) to avoid detection from authorities and it is the duty of both residents and management bodies to stay vigilant and report suspicious activities to the police.
Call the NCID 24-hour hotline (012-208 7222), he says.
“We always welcome tip-offs or information from the public,” he says.
Mohd Khalil does not expect this trend to continue.
“We are aware of their modus operandi, so I expect they won’t be using the same tactics.
“They will often change their ways once they know the police are onto them, but residents and management bodies must stay vigilant,” he adds.
“It is the first time a drug wholesaler has been busted and we have scored big in preventing the drugs from being supplied to 6.5 million addicts.
“The drug market has slowed down significantly,” he says.
His approach to drug enforcement is the thorough approach, where every level of the drug market is focused on, says Mohd Khalil.
The NCID launched multiple special operations, including Ops Ice Breaker and Ops Damn Tokan, over a six-month period, he adds.
“The special operations targeted the suppliers, pushers, transporters and wholesalers of drugs.
“Our aim is to cut the supply of drugs severely so that it does not even get to the streets, let alone to the addicts. Hopefully, we have been able to do that so far,” Mohd Khalil says.

Nur Jazlan: Criminals now operating from gated communities
Criminals are now operating from gated and guarded community within housing estates to avoid police from going after them, said Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed.
The Deputy Home Minister said the activities taking place in the gated and guarded communities included online gambling and prostitution.
He said such illegal activities were more prevalent in residential areas which did not have a gated and guarded scheme in its original development plan.
"Residents only started complaining to the police when they finally realised that vice activities were taking place in their neighbourhood," said Nur Jazlan after handing over financial allocation to 37 resident associations to finance the security and patrolling of their areas.
